Each track is between 260 and 425 metres long and it takes approximately one minute to complete four laps. For example, 10 time Australian Champion Leigh Adams set a record time of 59 seconds on a 342 metres (1,122 ft) track and produced an average speed of 83 km/h (49 mph). The speed on straight sections of the track reaches 110 km/h (70 mph) or more on longer tracks, but the limited speed on curves lowers the average.

At the start of a race it takes between one and two seconds for the motorcycle to reach the “curve speed” (somewhat lower than the average), which is roughly estimated to be the equivalent of 2.5 to 3 seconds to reach 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) (or 0 to 60 mph). 1996 brought major changes to the CBR900RR with the third generation CBR900RR. To optimize rigidity Honda revised the suspension and chassis. Larger thinner-walled extrusions for more torsional rigidity were used in the swingarm and frame, revised shock and fork internals and 5 mm (0.2 in) raised swingarm pivot. The handle bars were raised by 10 mm (0.4 in) and swept back by five degrees to improve the riding position. A 1 mm (0.04 in) bore increase raised the engine displacement to 918 cc (56.0 cu in). Other revisions included a smaller alternator, the addition of a throttle position sensor, extra clutch plates, and a larger exhaust.

The only changes for the 1997 model were graphics and color options.

In 1998, Honda continued subtle refinements in the fourth generation CBR900RR’s chassis. It got a stiffer frame more like the original, offset on the triple clamp reduced by 5 mm (0.2 in). Brakes got larger rotors on the front and new calipers and ergonomics was revised with raised footpegs. The engine got revised with 80 percent new internals in an effort to reduce friction and weight. Cylinders bore got an aluminum composites treatment and new pistons. The Royal Star Tour Deluxe is a large motorcycle. Rider seat height is 29.1 in (740 mm). It weighs 787 lb (357 kg) dry, which yields a weight of 844 lb (383 kg) with oil, coolant, and a full fuel tank. The Royal Star Tour Deluxe has a 67.5 in (1,710 mm) wheelbase. The shock absorbers are air adjustable for preload to help compensate for different load sizes. It has 9.3 gallons of storage in its hard side bags.

The drive package on the Royal Star Tour Deluxe is the same as the Yamaha Royal Star Venture including a liquid cooled 1,298 cc (79.2 cu in) (referred to as 1,300 cc) V4 engine. It has four valves per cylinder, overhead camshafts, and shim over bucket valves. The five speed overdrive transmission is part of the engine case and both the engine and transmission share oil. The drive shaft and final drive assembly are built into the left side of the double sided swing arm. Swing arm motion is damped by a monoshock mounted in the center of the frame. The clutch is of the wet plate design and is hydraulically activated by the left hand lever.

The brakes are all two piston design. Both front brakes are activated by the right hand lever. The rear brake is activated by the foot pedal on the right
