The 950SE is KTM’s response to the BMW HP2, a well-regarded high-performance dirtbike whose 1170cc ‘boxer’ engine made 105-horsepower. The HP2 won its first competition start in 2005 at the Erzberg Rodeo in Styria, Austria, an annual “hard enduro” race series attracting hundreds of competitors from around the world. BMW’s Motorrad Enduro Team Feil entered riders Simo Kirssi, Jimmy Lewis, and the winner of the previous year’s Erzberg Hare Scramble, Chris Pfeiffer.

At the time, KTM was recovering after a long period of stagnation, with a mandate to dominate in the offroad racing sector. Many industry watchers believed KTM rushed its 950SE into production to demonstrate its “big bike” capabilities against its European rival.

A factory race kit was available for the TS90 which consisted of an expansion chamber, light piston and rings, carburetor, and harder (colder range) plug and head which increased the size to 100 cc (6.1 cu in). In the North American market a 175cc race kit was available for the TS185. The 175 size was to match an established class. It consisted of an expansion chamber, new cylinder and head, piston, thin rings, larger carburetor, and much lower gearing. Different gearing was available for most models. The TF model (Mud Bug) was developed in the early 1970s and sold mainly in New Zealand and Australia. The TF series was made in three sizes; 100 cc, 125 cc, and 185 cc engines. These bikes were based on the ER range. The TF125 is still in production. It has left-and-right side stands with large bases, a large rear carrier, headlight and lever protection, a single seat, bash plate, large mud flaps and knobby tyres.

The GT550 and GT750 featured electric starting while other models, with the exception of the GT185, were kick start only.

All models were equipped with five-speed transmissions with the exception of the GT250 and GT380 which had a six-speed, and all models were equipped with drum brakes front and rear. 1973 three-cylinder models were equipped with hydraulically operated single disc brakes on the front with drum brakes on the rear. The GT750 featlured dual discs up front, another big “first” for Suzuki. Frames were all-welded mild steel tubing with long wheelbases to give stability at high speed
