Kawasaki was the last of the big four Japanese manufacturers to start making motorcycles. In 1960 it bought a share in the Meguro motorcycle company that since the 1930s had made four-stroke singles up to 500 cc and later twins up to 650 cc for the Japanese and south-east Asian markets. From 1963 Kawasaki took complete control of Meguro, and the Meguro model K 500 cc four-stroke parallel-twin was re-badged as a Kawasaki.

The Kawasaki W1 650 cc (actually 624 cc) four-stroke twin was developed from the Meguro K series, which Meguro had developed from a BSA A7 under license.

Kawasaki developed the lighter Kawasaki A1 Samurai in 1966. It was quickly followed by the larger bore model, the A7 Avenger, which is similar to the Samurai. Sharing all of the Samurai components aside from pistons, piston rings, different mufflers with reverse cones, it also featured a race developed oiling system called Injectolube. Oil was not only injected in with the petrol as on the 250 but was also fed to the main bearings. The crankcases and crank were also redesigned for use with the Injectolube system.

The ZX-6R 636 for 2019 has some updates consisting of: Euro4 compliance, KQS quickshifter (up only), updated bodywork and seat, LED headlights and updated dashboard. The claimed horsepower also sees a slight drop from the 2018 model’s 96.4 kW (129.3 hp) to 94.9 kW (127.3 hp).

The first generation ZZR600 (ZX-6 Ninja in different continents/markets) was updated in 1993 with lighter and bigger valves and intake-exhaust ducts, more permanence in the cams timing, lighter pistons, ram air. The two parts chassis (aluminium frame and steel sub-frame) changed to a one piece full aluminium chassis, and aesthetic changes.

Analogue instrumentation included standard speedometer on the left that rose in single MPH increments up to 170. Unlike the Suzuki competitor, the Katana, signal lights on the Kawasaki’s cluster were amber instead of green. Owners could also rely on a fuel gauge on the left (missing on D series) and a temperature gauge on the right which many motorcycles in the same class did not have at the time. Storage was minimal, but better than most sport bikes. There was room beneath the seat for the manual and registration, but not much else. An additional compartment could be found on the left side of the fairing and the ignition key was needed to open it
