The Ducati 800SS, introduced in 2003, is the smaller capacity, higher revving version of that year’s air-cooled Ducati SuperSport (SS) model range.
The 800SS is a popular base for production racing in the United States, where it competes against motorcycles such as the Suzuki SV650. It is also eligible for racing in the UK in the Minitwins series with a variety of clubs such as Bemsee/MRO, North Gloucester Road Racing Club (NGRRC), and the North East Motorcycle Racing Club (NEMCRC).
History
In 2003 a new fuel-injected desmodromic 90? V-twin, 88 mm x 66 mm, 803 cc engine, and a new six-speed gearbox were offered in the Supersport 800. There were two versions available: the 800 Supersport and the 800 Sport. The Supersport featured a high specification chassis whilst the Sport was a lower cost version with a less well-specified chassis. Both used the same engine and came in with either a full fairing or half-fairing. For 2010, the factory team riders are Pedrosa and Dovizioso, and the satellite team riders are Hiroshi Aoyama, de Puniet, Melandri and Marco Simoncelli. All riders are using ?hlins suspension components this year. The electronic systems were given an update, and the bike is shorter with a higher center of gravity.[33] Also, Honda hired Andre Zugna and Cristian Battaglia, formerly Yamaha race engineers, and Carlo Luzzi, formerly Jorge Lorenzo?s telemetry technician at Yamaha.[34]
According to one analysis of pre-season tests at Sepang and Qatar, Dovizioso’s average placing in the tests was third, while Pedrosa’s was ninth.[35] Pedrosa complained of problems with the suspension and chassis,[36] and at the first race of the season in Qatar, Dovizioso finished third, while Pedrosa finished in seventh place. Shortly after being launched in Europe reports of engine failures began to come in. Several causes for the failures were suggested. One suggested cause for the failures was the oddly shaped and located oil filter. Others blamed the bike’s complicated oil system for starving parts of lubrication. Others blamed the quality of the oil available at the time.
One of the two most commonly suspected causes was excessive heat coming from the balance tube connecting the exhaust ports. The other most common claim was that the Omni-Phase balancer’s weighted shafts were whipping oil in the sump into a froth at high rpms, aerating the oil and starving the crank of lubrication which then resulted in bearing failure. Yamaha described the cause as “a problem with heat build-up that prevented stable engine performance and insufficient machine durability”
