The R90S’ type 247 “airhead” engine was a pushrod OHV, two valve per cylinder, air-cooled flat-twin “boxer” unit. The engine was based closely on the R75/5, sharing the same stroke, but with a larger bore, to give a capacity of 898cc. The R90S weighed 215 kg (474 lb) and has a five-speed gearbox with a shaft final drive. The first R90S models had a two-tone paintwork scheme of “Smoke Black/Silver” with adhesive gold pinstripes. Feedback from unimpressed customers prompted BMW to return to hand painted pinstripes. Later R90S models were available also in two-tone “Daytona Orange” with red pinstriping. The R90S had a redesigned seat, with a small “ducktail” fairing which (in addition to an underseat tool tray) provided a small storage space lightweight items such as waterproofs. Standard equipment included a full toolkit, a hand pump, a first-aid kit and even a small hand towel with an embroidered BMW logo.

The R90S had a small bikini fairing which housed two analogue instruments: a clock and a voltmeter. Its 238 watt alternator was later upgraded to 250 watt. An adjustable hydraulic steering damper was manually adjusted via a knob on the steering head. Suspension was by long-travel telescopic forks and twin rear shocks whose rear dampers were adjustable for preload (the only suspension adjustment available). Whereas other BMW boxers had Bing slide constant velocity carburetor, the R90S was fitted with accelerator pump Dell’Orto carburetors. The RCV1000R lacks the seamless shift gearbox and the pneumatic operated valves of the RC213V. It is less fuel-efficient, and will have a 23-litre fuel tank, less than the 24 litre maximum for the 2014 Open class but still significantly more than the 20 litre limit for the RC213V and the other 2014 bikes with ?Factory? status.

Although the machine’s geometry is nearly identical to that of the factory RC213V, its ECU uses the official DORNA-issued ECU software, as opposed to the RC213V’s HRC-developed custom software. The RCV1000R’s 90-degree V4 valve-spring engine produces more than 175 kW at 16000 rpm, with torque of 110 N? m, and is equipped with a conventional transmission. Beyond the chopper-style Fury, the VT1300C line offered three conventional cruiser models for 2010, all of which remain in the lineup for 2014: Sabre, Interstate and Stateline.[57] Honda previously used both the Interstate and Sabre names for other models, the most recent being the VT1100C2 Shadow Sabre.

In contrast to the Fury, the 2010 Sabre emphasized function over form with a less extreme seating position, narrower handlebar and lower steering head, making the VT1300CS (aka VT13CS)[43] a fairly typical cruiser design, competing with other mid-size cruisers such as the Star Stryker.[32] Front forks on the Sabre were shorter as a consequence of the lower steering head, and so they did not need the large-diameter tubes used on the Fury. The Sabre had slightly more travel in its rear mono-shock and a steel swingarm rather than aluminum, plus a larger fuel tank that incorporated an instrument panel. The VT1300CS wheelbase was about an inch shorter that the Fury’s (but 4.5 inches longer than the old VTX1300C).[58
